Wednesday, April 23rd – Mid-Day Update
Todd McShay’s Mock Draft 4.0
It’s linked here, but a few notes:
- Jacksonville likes Jeanty (Coen in particular), but could entertain a trade back if they think they could still get Tet McMillan.
- “Iโm told by a reliable source that Carolina is looking to trade back and might take less than fair value to do so. If Jeanty is still on the board, this could be the spot where Denver moves up to get him.”
- “Iโm hearing that the 49ers donโt view offensive tackle as their most pressing need with the 11th pick. Instead, thereโs a belief they want to address the defensive front here.”
- On Miami at 13: “Itโs no secret Miami wants Kelvin Banks Jr. here.”
- On Atlanta at 15: “It comes down to Pearce or Marshallโs Mike Green here.” – has them selecting Pearce.
- “With a clean bill of health, [Jihaad] Campbell is considered by most teams to be one of the top 10-12 prospects in the class.”
- “I have it on good authority that Houston is aggressively trying to move up in the first roundโIโm hearing for Banks or Zabel.”
Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano talk about the Draft in their latest intel piece
Some notes from the article, which can be read here:
- Most chatter indicates the Giants prefer Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart over Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
- Wouldn’t be shocking to see Dart either fall out of the first round or go top-15.
- Pittsburgh has done lots of work on Ohio State QB Will Howard.
- Fowler: “Several industry sources believe the Patriots have an affection for LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell.”
- Ashton Jeanty and Tet McMillan mentioned for Jacksonville at 5.
- Raiders have been linked to Ashton Jeanty, but Mason Graham could be a name to watch if he falls to six.
- Raiders (6), Jets (7), Panthers (8), Saints (9) are all teams that could select a defensive lineman early. Names that could be called include Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams, Walter Nolen, Kenneth Grant, Mike Green, Derrick Harmon, James Pearce, and Shemar Stewart.
- Fowler: “Walker as a top-10 pick seems viable… Walker is firmly on the radar for Carolina at No. 8. And one industry source predicted his floor is probably Atlanta’s pick.”
- The Cowboys are likely to take a WR with their pick – two names to watch: Tet McMillan and Matthew Golden. Defensively, watch out for Jihaad Campbell – who is projected to go anywhere from late top-10 to the late teens.
- Tampa is the “de facto” floor for Jihaad Campbell.
- Teams have injury concerns for Will Johnson.
- Dolphins linked to DB in round one: Jahdae Barron and Malaki Starks are names to watch.
- Colston Loveland could be the first TE taken – though both he and Warren project to go pretty high.
- Don’t count out three RBs going in Round 1, with Hampton potentially in play for Denver. The Chiefs also had a call on Tuesday with Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson.
- Some potential first round picks that may surprise some: DL TJ Sanders (South Carolina), OT Aireontae Ersery (Minnesota), OL Donovan Jackson (Ohio State), DB Shavon Revel (East Carolina).
- Some names to watch on Day 2: WR Kyle Williams (Washington State), TE Mason Taylor (LSU), DL Deone Walker (Kentucky)
- Some potential trade candidates: Jets may look to trade back, Texans could try to move into the top-16 picks (potentially for Texas OT Kelvin Banks)
Dianna Russini empties her notebook
You can read the full article here, but these are some major takeaways:
- The Patriots brass are expected to use their top selection on OL.
- Jaguars and Raiders seem to be interested in moving up.
- The Texans are exploring the cost of moving up the board.
- The Bears like Ashton Jeanty.
- Falcons are linked to Tennessee’s James Pearce and Marshall’s Mike Green.
- The sense is that Denver is comfortable picking at #20 – they love the RBs in this class.
- Arizona WR Tet McMillan and Texas WR Matthew Golden are linked to Dallas at 12.
- Expect the Jets to have interest in TEs, including Tyler Warren, in the first round.
- Don’t expect the San Francisco 49ers to trade, they have interest in an edge rusher at #11.
- Look for the Vikings to trade back on draft night from #24.
- Sean McVay and co. could attempt to move up the board for a tight end in this draft.
- The Chiefs could move up a few spots, the Dolphins could move down from #13.
Saints are a point of intrigue
After yesterday’s report of the New Orleans Saints not being a landing spot (at least at pick #9) for Shedeur Sanders, one reporter came away with three names that could be the potential selection at #9.
“Some names Iโm now hearing for the #Saints to keep an eye on. Bosses would love it to be a QB Iโm sure [laughing emoji] but sounds like they are doing a lot of work on these three according to some teams and agents Iโve spoken with. With that being said, they are playing their cards really close to the vest so hard to really get a feel here but sounds like Iโm getting some consensus on these 3 names.
-Michiganโs Mason Graham DT
-Georgia LB Jalon Walker
-WR Tetairoa McMillan”
Tuesday, April 22nd – Evening Update
Albert Breer’s Tuesday Report
Albert Breer wrote about some of the draft night possibilities in his latest intel piece. Read his full article to get everything he said.
- The Houston Texans are looking at the possibility of trading up: with North Dakota State OL Grey Zabel and Texas tackle Kelvin Banks mentioned by name.
- The Panthers are the team to watch when it comes to Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker.
- Kelvin Banks is expected to go in the first half of the first round on Thursday – with the Raiders, Saints, Bears, and 49ers listed as potential landing spots.
- The Jacksonville Jaguars are more likely to select an offensive player rather than a defensive one, at this point in time.
- Some teams (those more analytically-inclined) are lower on Michigan DL Mason Graham – with some even ranking him below Miss. DL Walter Nolen.
Yahoo’s Charles Robinson gives some updates on what he’s heard
Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports wrote about some of the rumors going around this week. Check out his full article for more insight – but these are some of the points we found interesting.
- “I cannot 100 percent rule out that Sanders could go No. 3 overall to the Giants”
- Two teams have trade up buzz: Broncos for RB/WR, Bills for a CB (names Barron), Steelers mentioned as trade down candidate
- “I think it would be a surprise if the Jacksonville Jaguars didnโt take an offensive skill position player at fifth overall. Iโll just leave it at that.”
- Assuming the Saints stick and pick at #9, Robinson finds it likely that the selection is either an offensive lineman or Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty.
- 49ers are likely to select a defensive lineman with the #11 overall pick. If Ashton Jeanty makes it there, San Francisco could opt to trade back.
- “There are some ice-cold assessments on Arizona Stateโs Cam Skattebo”
- There are likely only three first-round WRs – with Arizona WR Tet McMillan likely coming off the board before the Cowboys pick at 12.
- Bowling Green TE Harold Fannin is generally viewed as a late third round/early fourth round prospect.
Tony Pauline gave a few NFL rumors to look after
Read the full list here, but some notables:
- Multiple people brought up Jalon Walker’s name for the #4 overall pick in New England.
- Ashton Jeanty to Jacksonville is a “distinct possibility” at this point.
- The New York Jets collectively like Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. Head coach Aaron Glenn, though, would prefer to draft a defensive player with the team’s first pick.
Saints Insider Jeff Duncan claims the #9 pick will not be Shedeur Sanders
“I’m not sure who the Saints are going to pick at No. 9 on Thursday night. But I think I can safely say that it won’t be Shedeur Sanders.” – Jeff Duncan
We’re officially putting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Shedeur Sanders watch
Earlier today, Steelers GM Omar Khan said, “I think it’s a good quarterback class. I really do.”
Shedeur Sanders also gave his Mt. Rushmore of NFL duos. His list? Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams. Derek Carr and Chris Olave (?). And the last on the list?
“Whoever is going to be the quarterback for DK Metcalf and George Pickens.”
Tuesday, April 22nd – Morning Update
As if we didn’t know already, but the Titans are keeping Pick #1
“After months of speculation, the consensus around the league is that the #Titans will stay at No. 1 and pick, rather than trade, sources say. No surprise. Decision made. There was real trade interest. But as one team said, ‘They never opened the door.’ All eyes on Cam Ward.” – Ian Rapoport.
A few team-specific nuggets
- The Dallas Cowboys are “enamored” with Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons, who was recently cleared medically.
- The Eagles have done lots of homework on UCLA EDGE Femi Oladejo, who could be in play as soon as pick #32.
- The Detroit Lions are unlikely to trade WR Jameson Williams for anything less than a first round pick.
- Ian Rapoport says that three offensive tackles could go in the top-10, or even the top-8.
Rich Eisen talks rumors he’s heard
Rich Eisen talked on his show about a few rumors he’s heard:
- “I’m hearing the Patriots love, adore Will Campbell, and are going to do the sensible thing, which is protect [Drake Maye] before giving him weapons.”
- “I’m hearing that the Jacksonville Jaguars could go anywhere with [the fifth overall pick].” Eisen mentioned Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty and Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon as two names to watch.
- “I’m hearing Jaxson Dart falls out of the first round.”
Monday, April 21st – Evening Update
Mykel Williams, Josh Simmons no longer attending NFL Draft in person
Mykel Williams and Josh Simmons have declined their Green Room invitations to the NFL Draft in Green Bay for this coming weekend, per Adam Schefter.
Todd McShay drops a few nuggets
Todd McShay has dropped a few NFL Draft tidbits early this week:
- On Mykel Williams: “The league loves him. I saw a board (from an NFL team) where he was 6th or 7th overall.”
- “I will be very surprised if Walker is available at No. 8 for the Carolina Panthers, which is the spot most people have been eyeing for him.”
- On Gray Zabel: “My guess is there will be a bigger gap between where Zabel and Alabama’s Tyler Booker come off the board than between where OT1 and Zabel are selected. I love the fit in Seattle at no. 18, and it won’t shock me if he goes as early as no. 13.”
- McShay says the Bengals and Falcons are willing to overlook character red flags on James Pearce Jr., Walter Nolen, and Mike Green.
- “I don’t think Ashton Jeanty is going #6 to the Raiders.”
Benjamin Allbright: Broncos like checking price tags
“Seems like I say this all the time: DEN likes to know the price tag on everything. Doesnโt mean theyโre trying to pursue something. Just a few months ago, told you theyโre not pursuing Deebo/Kupp (& they didnโt) but they called to get the price b/c they want to know price on everything. Responsible teams do.” – Benjamin Allbright.
Albert Breer wrote about some draft week possibilities
Among the notable details are below. You can read the full article here, there’s more info on Aaron Rodgers, among some other team-specific details:
- “I wouldnโt be surprised if more than a quarter of the first round is devoted to offensive linemen.”
- “If some team takes a big swing with a trade up in the first round, I wouldnโt be stunned if it was for Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty. The New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers are all open to moving down, but to this point there havenโt been a ton of teams looking to move up (Denver has explored it).”
- “Michigan CB Will Johnson has a knee issue thatโs been flagged. It shouldnโt affect him in the short term, but teams are concerned it could impact his longevity.”
- “Georgia edge rusher Mykel Williams had just a so-so workout last week and told teams he wasnโt at his best because an ankle injury from the fall hampered him a little.”
- “Alabama LB Jihaad Campbell had shoulder surgery after the combine, and teams are projecting him as a candidate to start the season on PUP.”
- “East Carolina CB Shevon Revel tore his ACL in September. Heโs highly regarded, and wouldโve likely been a first-rounder had he stayed healthy. As it stands, heโs expected back around the start of training camp, which will be more of a problem for some teams than others.”
- The uncertain futures of Jameson Williams, Kayvon Thibodeaux could elicit some phone calls this week.
- “Iโd be surprised if Banks makes it out of the top 11-or-so picks. Heโs more of a prototype left tackle than Campbell or Membou and is solid character-wise. And while he had a couple rough outings against Georgia, thereโs enough on tape to believe heโll improve.”
- “Interesting maybe to me aloneโsome teams prefer Michiganโs Colston Loveland over Penn Stateโs Tyler Warren at tight end.”
- “I wouldnโt read too much into Jalen Milroeโs draft invite. The NFL wants to make a bigger deal out of the second night of the draft.”
Monday, April 21st – Morning Update
Who goes higher than expected?
Matt Miller: Kelvin Banks, Mykel Williams
Adam Schefter (see below): Kelvin Banks, Jahdae Barron, Armand Membou, Carson Schwesinger
Peter Schrager: Mykel Williams, Colston Loveland
NFL Teams are talking – expect a lot of buzz – Peter Schrager
“A takeaway as we start Draft week. Just about every one of the teams I’m talking with has some gossip about another team they’ve heard in last twelve hours. That includes up top. Phones are ringing, too. It’s a very weird Draft class. Expect a lot of buzz over the next 72 hours.” – Peter Schrager
What will the Jaguars do at Pick #5?
Dane Brugler: “I don’t think the Jeanty-to-Jacksonville pairing is talked about enough. No other player at No. 5 makes a greater impact for the Jaguars than Ashton Jeanty, IMO.”
Adam Schefter says to watch out for Arizona WR Tet McMillan at #5 (see below).
Connor Hughes says Giants may trade up for intriguing SEC QB
“Jaxson Dart is a name to watch for the #Giants as a trade-up option on Thursday. Sources I touched base with said heโs someone Brian Daboll is high on โ most out of QBs other than Cam Ward. Among qualities Daboll values in QBs is toughness. Dart has that. Giants wonโt be alone in QB pursuit, though. Matter of how aggressive they want to be.” – Hughes on Twitter.
Jonathan Jones releases his once-yearly Mock Draft
Some tidbits from his article:
- On Patriots at #4: “Even if Carter is available here, I still think the Pats take an offensive tackle here.”
- On Josh Simmons (at 13 to Miami, in his Mock): “Multiple sources have indicated Simmons’ knee looks great upon medical rechecks, so he passes there. His play is a good scheme fit for Miami too. Many believe there’s a chance he could have been OT1 in this draft. I know some teams also wouldn’t take him this high, but Miami takes a chance on a position of need.”
- Tyler Booker goes 17 to the Bengals: “An earlier version of this mock had Booker going No. 25, and after more calls last week I realized he shouldn’t be there then.”
- On Omarion Hampton going 20 to Denver: “This pairing seems to obvious to me and the rest of the NFL that the Broncos may actually have to trade up to make sure they get the guy everyone believes they’ll take.”
- On Jihaad Campbell’s shoulder: “I’m told his recovery from shoulder surgery is going well and there shouldn’t be concerns for his 2025 availability.”
Adam Schefter gives insights into the NFL Draft
Adam Schefter released his annual NFL Draft insights column – which included the following tidbits. These are all paraphrased, and may not be written exactly as said in Schefter’s piece – so I encourage you to read that article to get more clarity on each of these bullet points:
- Patriots at Pick #4 is where things get murky, after a top-3 of Ward/Hunter/Carter (in that order)
- Evaluators don’t view any tackles or (non-Travis Hunter) corners as elite prospects in this draft class
- Falcons could use pick #15 on an edge rusher, but they could also trade back
- Giants have done the most homework on Colorado and former Jackson State QB Shedeur Sanders, but it does not seem likely he’s the third overall pick at this point
- The New Orleans Saints also don’t seem to have as much interest in Sanders, though they could be a team to watch with Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart
- Saints are more likely to select an offensive or defensive lineman
- The Steelers have not been planning to draft a QB in the first round, but that was before Sanders was projected to fall. His range is projected as #3 to the Giants to #21 to the Steelers – but could potentially fall further
- Teams that may look to trade down include the Jaguars, Panthers, 49ers, Falcons, Seahawks, Buccaneers, and Vikings.
- As of right now, not many teams are looking to move up, though. Denver is one of only a few that has indicated interest in such a move
- Will Levis and Sam Howell are two QBs that could be moved this weekend – among Kayvon Thibodeaux, Greg Newsom, Travis Etienne, Odafe Oweh, and George Pickens
- Many believe that the Bears are hoping Ashton Jeanty makes it to 10
- Some players that could be selected higher than most think include Armand Membou, Kelvin Banks, Jahdae Barron, and Carson Schwesinger
- Tet McMIllan is a name to watch with the Jaguars at the 5th overall pick – Jacksonville isn’t as chalk as being projected – with most mock drafts having Mason Graham at pick #5
- Two names to watch for the Jets: Jahdae Barron and Tyler Warren
- Nobody is going to be surprised if the Browns select a QB with the 33rd overall pick
- Emeka Egbuka is a name that is likely to come off the board in the 20s.
- Kyle Williams, Jack Bech, Savion Williams, Jaylin Noel, and Jayden Higgins are names that could be a part of a run on WRs early on day two.
- The Titans, Eagles, and Texans will be aggressive trading around the draft board
- AJ Brown is not available for trade
- Travis Hunter wants to be announced as a wide receiver and cornerback when his name is called
Matt Miller says there isn’t much consensus on the top tackle in this year’s draft.
“There isn’t a consensus among teams on who the top OL is. Would say most have Campbell but some have Membou and some have Banks. After those three–Grey Zabel probably the next off the board. Then Josh Simmons.” – Miller on Twitter.
Miller also tweeted that we should expect OL, TE, DE, and CB to “fly off the board”.
Tom Pelissero says that Ashton Jeanty only took three “30” visits
“My question isn’t, ‘Is Ashton Jeanty going to end up going somewhere in the top-10?’ I believe he will. My question is, ‘Does somebody, in order for a running back, decide, we gotta trade above the Raiders to insure that we get him?’ – Good Morning Football on Twitter.
